Airport Welcome Program (International Students)
The Student Success Centre partnered with the City of Hamilton, Mohawk College and Columbia International College to provide one month’s worth of welcomes for all international students coming to Hamilton to study.
Staff and student volunteers are positioned outside Terminal 3 at Pearson Airport, ready to support international students arriving throughout the month of August.
This program provides incoming international students with a warm welcome, direction on how to get to Hamilton, and to answer any questions students may have.
The Alpine Tower creates the ideal setting for fostering teambuilding, improving communication, and developing self-esteem. Visually dramatic, our most popular design series provides Universal Access for persons of all abilities. Both designs offer high and low challenge course elements accommodating 8 to 36 participants. Each design offers a tremendous variety of challenges and group initiatives, which prompts groups to return again and again for more teambuilding experiences.

The course includes weekly 50 minute workshops with interactive group exercises, creative reflections, self-awareness and mindfulness practices to try at home, and a meeting with a staff coach. You will be guided in practicing daily mindfulness exercises in your own time and submit a short weekly reflection about your experiences of these exercises. A completion certificate will be granted for participating in the full 5 weeks and staff coaching session.
A six week group for those struggling with Binge Eating Disorder or Bulimia. Participants will learn about the causes and symptoms of disordered eating. Weekly tracking and monitoring of physical and psychological aspects of the disorder will help participants discover how to identify their specific triggers. Individualized coping mechanisms will be developed to manage behaviours. Screening interview required.

Health, Safety Risk Management purchases insurance and manages claims for the University, with the exception of employee benefit insurance which is managed through Human Resources, and student benefit insurance which is managed through the Students’ Union and the Graduate Student Association.

This program is one of Hospitality Services sustainability initiatives incorporating two parts:
Reusable Mugs– Bring your reusable coffee mug to any of our locations on campus to receive a $.10 discount and save a takeout coffee cup from going to a landfill
Eco-Takeout Containers– By participating in our green container program, you can take your meal to-go in a reusable container. All meal purchases made with a green container at participating restaurants will receive a $0.25 discount. You can participate in the program for an unlimited number of meals for $5.00
Composting is a test project or organic waste collection on campus. The project is starting within 5 buildings on campus (3 residences and 2 libraries). Current composting will be shipped off-site but the goal is to have on-site composting for the 2019-2020 year.

Designing Canada: The Masterclass (One Day Conference)
This conference exposes students to issues, as speakers contributing to public policy, healthcare, the economy, education, democracy and technology work through light case studies, based on their own career experiences
The conference is open to McMaster students, and to a limited number of students from outside of McMaster
Designing Canada is a collaboration between the Wilson Leadership Scholar Award and the Socrates Project, and is being piloted with the support of campus partners
In a supportive small-group environment, participants will learn helpful ways to cope with periods of intense emotional distress. The group will focus on understanding painful emotional experiences and developing concrete strategies to prevent, decrease or manage painful life experiences.
Our goal is to help employees with work and life changes due to illnesses and disability. Employee Health Services administers the University’s disability benefits programs including the Salary Continuance Plan, the Sick Leave benefit, and WSIB benefits. EHS offers a confidential program designed to support employees that require a leave of absence due to illness or non-occupational injury. Further detail on these programs is provided below.
McMaster is avoiding the disposal of waste in landfills by using a number of bin locations to recycle old electronics. Electronics contain harmful chemicals such as lead and mercury, and are often expensive to dispose of in a responsible manner. There are multiple designated locations on campus where electronics such as printers, telephones, and computers can be dropped off.
Electronics Collection Day:
In addition to various collection locations on campus, Facility Services and the Sustainability Office hosted an electric waste collection day. The Facility Services Trucking department, UTS, Office of Sustainability and Greentec are involved in making this event successful.
Collection, reuse and recycling of batteries has become an important area of focus. Batteries contain harmful chemicals, such as cadmium, mercury and lead, and are costly to dispose of responsibly. The battery recycling program has been initiated in collaboration with Energy management and Sustainability Division, Grounds and Environmental & Occupational Health Support Services at McMaster.
Old Toner Recycling:
McMaster is committed to recycling or reusing printer cartridges through its old toner and ink cartridges recycling program on campus. Old toner and ink cartridges are very harmful to the environment in so many ways.
The Education, Outreach and Support Program engages students, staff and faculty members through education including worships and special events. The ESP team works closely with on and off campus partners to advance equity and accessibility and to challenge rape culture on campus.
EOS also provides support to the President’s Advisory Committee on Building an Inclusive Community (PACBIC), the Anti-Violence Network and the McMaster Accessibility Council.
• Every year, ISP has the privilege of hosting an Elder in Residence.
• This person comes to ISP weekly and does crafts with students, provides advice, or lends a supportive ear if you need it.
• Whether you are enrolled the Indigenous Studies Program Degree or another program on campus you are always welcome to participate in the Elder in Residence Program.

McMaster is now home to 13 electric vehicles and nine charging stations. Last year, in collaboration with Parking Services, the Office of Sustainability surveyed faculty and staff to gauge interest and knowledge of electric vehicles.
The response rate was positive and using the results, we worked collaboratively with Parking Services to develop a policy on electric vehicle usage on campus.
This year, 4 additional EVC’s were installed in from of the Hatch Centre. There are also plans to install 2 additional EVC’s in the Peter George Living and Learning Centre upon its completion.
Funded through the McMaster Student Union, EFRT is a student-volunteered certified emergency medical response team. They provide emergency medical services on campus (average response time of 3-5 minutes). EFRT operated 24/7 during the Fall and Winter terms, summer hours are 9-5. EFRT does not operate during Thanksgiving, Easter, holiday breaks and reading weeks. Responders are trained Red Cross Emergency Medical Responders and have additional Mental Health First Aid Certifications. More senior responders are further trained in International Trauma Life Support (ITLS).

Employee Career Services supports and empowers employees with strategies to achieve personal and professional potential. Employee Career Services offers one-on-one coaching as well as team sessions and workshops. These services will provide employees with the professional training needed to improve interviewing, self-marketing, and networking skill set. From leadership coaching to retirement planning.

The Feather Family Climbing Wall is 30 feet wide and 36 feet high, and offers members an opportunity to reach new heights in fitness. The climbing wall caters to all skill levels, with a variety of routes to offer different levels of difficulty for beginners and experts alike.

Fire alarm systems are tested every month – ring – stop – ring again and you are not required to leave the building. If ringing persists, it is a REAL alarm and you must leave the building. Failure to do so is a finable violation of the Residence Code of Conduct (RCC).

The FCC space is where individuals can come in to pick up whatever food or hygiene items they require. We hope to empower our partners through personal choice and self-service. Our space is open Monday-Friday from 10:30am-2:30pm, and we have volunteers present to help and answer questions if needed. In having a physical space, we hope to increase our campus presence and de-stigmatize issues surrounding food banks. Note: we open half an hour prior to the opening of Bridge’s Cafe, should any FCC partners choose to access our space during a lower-traffic time of day.

The Good Food Box Program provides students with access to purchasing fresh, Ontario-grown, seasonal produce at a fraction of what it would cost in a grocery store. Students can place an order through our website from the 10th to the 25th of the preceding month (i.e. to order a December GFB, the order must be placed between November 10th-25th).
GFBs contain produce retailing at upwards of $30.

The Biology Greenhouse is a teaching and research facility in the Department of Biology. While many plants are grown in the short term for research studies, the permanent collection is used in plant biology classes offered by the Biology Department and for outreach to local schools and the public. The Greenhouse, with its 780 square meters under glass, houses a richly diverse collection of live plants encompassing in excess of 217 species in 150 genera from over 77 plant families. The plant collection contains bamboo, insect-eating cobra plants, a chocolate tree, a coffee tree, a palm tree, sugarcane, cycads, bananas and more!

This drop in style group is a collaboration between Student Wellness and Open Circle for students who are experiencing grief or loss. This group will provide a safe and confidential space for sharing experiences of grief while respecting each other’s questions, feelings, viewpoints, or spirituality as it relates to each person’s healing process. This group will include reflective sharing and inquiry, expressive arts, mindfulness and self-compassion based exercises.

In the month of October, wellness initiatives are presented to McMaster employees, with the theme varying every year. Past themes have involved financial wellness, nutrition, and teamwork. Indigenous Water Quality Improvement Project
• Project working with two distinct communities, Six Nations of the Grand River (Ontario) and Lubicon Cree Nation of Little Buffalo (northern Alberta), to capture the range of water challenges in Indigenous communities.
• The project will use an innovative research framework to facilitate sharing and integration of contemporary science and Indigenous and Local Knowledge to monitor source waters with continuous environmental sensors, investigate the cause of health issues related to contaminated water, and develop appropriate place-based solutions.
• The Outcome: The co-creation of sensors, data analysis and culturally relevant tools will build long-term and sustained community capacity to address current and future uncertainties in water quality. Many other Indigenous communities across Canada will stand to benefit from the knowledge, experience, and expertise gained from this project.

McMaster University is committed to providing a system for proper management of all hazardous materials which includes acquisition, storage, handling, use and disposal. Specific programs as well as training modules have been developed for hazardous materials and we are constantly reviewing, improving and adding to our programs and training. McMaster is serious about ensuring everyone understands the hazards these materials pose to both people and the environment and that everyone works appropriately with them. McMaster takes a pro-active approach to protecting both people and the environment and will only work with hazardous disposal companies that show a commitment to protecting the environment.
A community-based event open to everyone, where individuals can drop by to share a bowl of hot, vegan soup at zero-cost. This event is meant to provide individuals with the space to take a break and recharge during their busy day. We also hope to provide the opportunity to share more about the FCC and its programs, and start discussions about food insecurity and student hunger on campus. We ask that individuals bring re-usable containers should they choose to take their soup to-go!
An anonymous and confidential method of accessing support from the FCC space. Orders can be placed online through our lockers of Love survey using an unique ID code and e-mail* of their choice (*E-mail accounts do not have to be McMaster affiliated), and their package of food and/or hygiene items will be delivered to an undisclosed locker on campus for pickup within 2 days. Individuals will be notified of the locker location and combination via e-mail when the order is ready for pickup. This initiative runs throughout the year.

MAC HALO- McMaster University Health Facilitation Workshop
MAC HALO is a group that offers interdisciplinary presentations to health-related topics requested by the community fit to the relevance of society & demographic of our audiences. Our goal is to promote health and wellbeing both in the McMaster and Hamilton community and spread awareness about current and prevalent health issues by providing support, workshops, presentations and resources. We cater to individuals from all walks of life, socioeconomic status and educational backgrounds in order to empower all: women, men, children, youth & Indigenous peoples, LGBTQ+ and many more. Through our engaging, accessible and interactive workshops we play a central role in promoting health and education and shed light on the available resources for staff, faculty and students in McMaster and the greater community. Exclusively for first-year off-campus students, Mac/One is designed to help with the social and academic transition to university life.
By joining Mac/One, you’ll be connected to fellow students with similar passions and interests through our Living Learning Community (LLC) events, have a home base on campus to relax and study with access to a designated residence building, and get extra academic support with drop-in professional tutoring in our Residence Academic Centres.
• In the month of April, a fitness and well-being challenge is presented to McMaster employees. Themes have included step counting, healthy minute tracking, and goal setting. The ultimate goal of the MACtive program is to build healthy habits among McMaster employees.

Implemented in 2012 with the help of community organizations, Teaching and Community garden provides space for the McMaster community to learn about growing food and sustainability, develop gardening skills and awareness of local produce.
In its sixth year, the garden saw many varieties of plants, vegetables and herbs flourishing and feeding the McMaster community.

The Food Collective Centre is McMaster’s on-campus food bank and food security resource. We are a service run by students dedicated to ensuring that food is always accessible to support food insecure individuals. This element speaks to responsibilities as well as accountability of all parties to include contractors and visitors.
A visitor’s log is to be used within restricted areas of the workplace i.e. facility services shops, hospitality kitchens, nuclear reactor and level 2 and 3 labs. All visitors who are temporarily entering the workplace and may be admitted to areas generally off limits to the public need to be signed in and out using the visitor’s log found in the appendix of RMM 102.
The visitor is on business but is not under contract. This program also discusses non-routine work and the need to refresh training.

Reconnect to your authentic self through a weekend retreat filled with opportunities to reconnect with yourself and get back in touch with your center. Awaken to your life as you uncover where you are now in your story and reflect on where your story is taking you. Engage in contemplation and community through hiking, reflective exercises, creative arts, meditation, and cooking and sharing meals. Listen to the authenticity of who you are, and let that truth emerge into your daily living.
Spring Volunteer Retreat:
Grow with nature by giving back through activities such as planting a garden, rebuilding a board walk, cleaning up garbage, cutting back undergrowth on nature trails, raking, and other tasks. Connect with other participants through activities such as hiking, reflective exercises, creative arts, meditation, and sharing meals. Apart from community building, connect with your inner self and reflect on your place in the cycles of life.
With donations through the Student Life Enhancement Fund, the Outdoor Activity Space was installed at the north end of the Mona Campbell Track in August of 2015. This space features outdoor benches, parallel bars, a boulder rock and rope bridge that enable the user to perform various activities at any fitness level.
ParticipACTION is a challenge to all McMaster employees to get up and get morning, in order to make Hamilton “Canada’s Most Active Community”. The McMaster Healthy Workplace Committee offers events at various campus locations for those who wish to participate, such as Learn to Salsa, Kickboxing 101, Karate Lessons and Library Fitness Circuits.

Pee4Pizza is a free, confidential STI testing day on campus. All STI testing will be handled by Hamilton Public Health and will not be linked to your student record in any way. Student ID cards will not be used for registration.
It’s important to get tested at least once a year if you are sexually active. Making STI tests part of your routine healthcare is a great way to stay healthy. It should be normal as going to the dentist!

The urine sample will be used to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea in your penis or vagina, since these are the most common STIs in this age group and in Hamilton. If you test positive, you’ll receive a call from Public Health for options for in-person treatment in a private space on campus.
Washrooms on the 3rd floor of MUSC will be gender-neutral for the day. An accessible washroom is available on the 3rd floor, and gendered washrooms will be available on the 2nd floor.

The Personal Discovery Course is a four week self-development series free from cost, stress, and exams. Explore personal values: Who am I? What gives my life meaning? Where do I want to go? What do I want to get out of my life, look back and be glad that I did it? How can I make a difference? Create your own life mission statement.
The course includes a weekly 1 hour workshop with discussion, staff coach (at least one meeting with coach), weekly personal reflection activities, and additional resources. A completion certificate will be granted for participating in the full 4 weeks and staff coaching session. Weekly meeting time for group workshops is set based on participants’ schedules.
Personal Discovery Course- Graduate Students (Open Circle)

At McMaster, we understand that an individual’s personal and professional life cannot always be distinctly compartmentalized. Events like spirit days, holiday celebrations, sporting events and family outings help employees decompress.
• 10-week psychoeducational-process group aimed to support queer and trans students in learning about how to cultivate resilience through experiential exercises and group discussion in a queer-trans affirming space.
Real-time energy data is collected throughout campus and provides information about energy consumption and how it is impacted by building design, weather and individual behaviours.
A really Simple Syndication (RSS) fed is connected to each building on campus, and collects information about energy consumption. This information is then communicated to the greater McMaster community through electronic display screens located throughout campus.
The objective is to provide education and knowledge about McMaster’s sustainability efforts and progress and encourage changes in behaviour and participation towards sustainability among the campus community.
Since September 2018, Housing & Conference Services has been conducting a pilot project in three residence buildings to divert organic waste from the landfill. McKay, Edwards and Whidden Halls have all been equipped with a three-stream waste system that allows co-mingle recycling, organic waste and garbage to be sorted across the residence halls.
The results thus far: We partnered with Busch Systems to conduct a waste audit comparing diversion rates of organic waste and recycling from the garbage in buildings with two (garbage and recycling) and three-stream (garbage, recycling, organic waste) systems.

Join us to learn about meditation and supporting each other in becoming more mindful. Each week begins with a check-in about our experience of the past week, then a meditation practice is introduced and guided for 15-20 minutes of practice, followed by an opportunity to discuss any questions or insights. Each week we explore a different mindfulness practice including breath awareness, guided imagery, artistic expression, and other activities that the group wishes to learn together. No experience necessary – whether you are new to meditation or already engaging in regular reflection, having the support of a group can help to strengthen your practice.

Experience guided creative practices (visual, written, or other) while reflecting with a theme. Let go of what you think you “should” create, following your inner knowing while practicing letting go of the outcome. You might be surprised by what you create. No artistic experience needed.
Movement Meditation Circle (MONTHLY):
A safe space for authentic and free-flowing movement. Journey via music and guided movement meditation inward towards your own truth, then outward to discover how to bring this new glimpse of yourself into daily life. Join us in the deeply liberating practice of shedding imposed expectations about how you should move and instead listening to the wisdom of your own body and allowing it to guide you in your own way of moving and perhaps dancing. No experience needed, just a willingness to move and let go into the moment.

The Sobi Bike Share Program provides bicycles around the city for people to use as an easy, affordable and sustainable method for commuting. With five bike stations (hubs) on campus, the McMaster Students Centre bike hub is the most used in the City of Hamilton. Students, Faculty and Staff are all able to purchase a discounted membership which provides access to the bikes located at the hubs on campus.
Open Circle’s resource staff are available for spiritual companioning, an opportunity to take regular time out of your daily pace for reflective space and conversation. A spiritual companion is someone who listens in a supportive and resourceful way, acting as a sounding board as you discover your own truth and sift through your experiences to find meaning. Possible topics of exploration are values, self-awareness, life choices, mindfulness practices, spiritual practices and beliefs, “what am I going to do with my life?” etc.

The Student Support and Case Management Office (SSCM) provides support to students throughout their time at University, providing resources to manage issues as well as crisis prevention and intervention for students who may be experiencing difficulty on campus.
The SSCM has two primary, often-intersecting areas of focus:
Administering the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities (the Code); and
Providing support to students through Case Management services.
In addition, the SSCM is one of the University’s four Intake Office to receive and investigate complaints under McMaster’s Sexual Violence Policy (SVP) and Discrimination and Harassment Policy (D&H) – in the instance where the respondent is a student.
Supports students with Autism or other neuro-diverse needs as needed. These supports are complimentary to assistive technology, learning strategies, academic accommodations, test and exam administration, transition and so forth.

A multi-day event run throughout the Fall and Winter exam periods. We provide multiple rooms for students to study, as well as drinks and snacks for students throughout the night. On January 1, 2018, McMaster University will adopt a 100% tobacco and smoke-free campus. Several university
areas are already smoke-free and have been for many years. These include university buildings and vehicles as
well as public spaces such as sport fields and related structures. Hospitals and hospital grounds, where many

The Art of Seeing is a visual literacy program developed by the McMaster University Department of Family Medicine and the McMaster Museum of Art in partnership to enhance and support professional competency in observation, communication and compassion.
Learning to look at visual art is a means to a better understanding of ourselves and others. Program participants will develop skills to enhance and support professional and personal growth with an emphasis on wellness, resilience and humanistic leadership. Research has shown that these traits can be learned by way of viewing art in an art gallery. Art is one way to tell our stories as it helps us understand how we fit into our cultures, communities and workplaces.
The Art of Seeing program has been offered to McMaster residents, faculty staff, community leaders and business at several Ontario sites. The program is tailored to suit each group’s needs in terms of content, length of program, and specific location, and range from a half-day workshop to a six-week course. These sessions can be hosted in a single location or presented a t a variety of cultural institutions.
With so much talk of toxic masculinity, what does healthy masculinity look like? This program for male students will explore topics such as mental health, ally-ship, and dating as they relate to men today through conversations over breakfast.

Timeless: Intergenerational Program
As Canada’s population is aging, there is an important opportunity to leverage the wisdom and strength of those who have contributed substantially to the social and economic fabric of our country. One way to ensure that these contributions are recognized long into the future is by providing opportunities to facilitate knowledge sharing with younger generations. This program is the result of a study led by MIRA to understand the necessary considerations for designing and developing a physical space and programming to enable interactions between university students and older adults.
Older adults aged 65 and over that are able to commit 1-2 hours a month to visiting the University campus.
The TMG Day of Service is an initiative organized by a group of McMaster TMG volunteers. The purpose of this initiative is to deepen the understanding of the McMaster community towards the complex issues facing Hamilton. It aims to assist in the efforts of community agencies to improve the quality and conditions of their clients lives. It strengthens the service-oriented and collaborative culture among TMG employees and helps identify how this knowledge can inform our work as a university.
An 8-week group therapy opportunity for female-identified individuals who have experienced sexual violence, intimate partner/domestic violence or childhood sexual abuse. The group will provide a safe, supportive environment for those whose recovery process could benefit from connecting with others and supporting one another. Walk in Nature Days (WIND)
• Walk in Nature Series. Each week you can get outside and leave your worries behind by getting into nature with others in a positive, mutually supportive environment. No experience, sign-up or skills required, just you and your hiking/walking shoes.
Develop and implement programs and staff SWC booths, facilitate workshops, develop educational material, write newsletter articles, collaborate with other campus groups, host large-scale events and awareness weeks, create bulletin board or displays for fairs
• Group classes and education sessions are offered to help you develop skills to manage your mental health concerns. Our groups provide an opportunity to learn and practice effective coping skills in a confidential and comfortable environment.
• The groups offered through our counselling services. You will be expected to fill out an intake form and attend sessions as indicated by the facilitator. Groups often have recommended readings or between sessions activities. Any questions can be directed to the facilitator. Repeat attendance is welcomed.
WellTrack is a self-help interactive therapy application that can be used to monitor your mental wellness and track your progress. The application includes guided therapy for stress, anxiety, and depression as well as general relaxation techniques including a virtual Zen room. An art based drop in group for individuals who are interested in expanding their understanding of self. The focus of this group is to learn and embrace parts of your personality that are outside of your awareness or just beginning to emerge into your awareness.
Valued at up to $25 000, the WLSA is a leadership development and career launcher program that complements your studies
It involves about 15 hours/month- less than a TA or RAship – and includes experiential learning opportunities
The award program is open to incoming and current McMaster graduate students at all levels whose research and interests relate to democracy, the economy, education, healthcare, the impacts of technology, or public policy in a Canadian context

WGEN is the MSU Women + Gender Equity Network, a peer support driven service that caters to women, trans folk, people who identify outside the gender binary, and all survivors of sexual and gender-based violence of all gender identities. WGEN provides a safe(r) space on campus in MUSC 204, it acts as a place for people to go and feel safe, talk about articles and issues in the media, make friends, and bond through common experiences. The space also has a physical library with a number of resources available for the McMaster community to use.
Along with facilitating our safe(r) space, we hold social events to build community, workshops to educate all folks, and programs and campaigns to advocate and educate on behalf of and with the groups we were created to support.
Women + Gender Equity Network (WGEN) Individual Groups
WGEN offers individual support bookings through the school year. Individual support sessions involve scheduling a time to have a private peer support session with one of our executives in MUSC 204.
If you are interested in booking an individual peer support session, please send an email to email@example.com and provide us with a general sense of your availability. We will be in touch with you as soon as possible. Please note that there is no need to disclose why you are booking this session.
WGEN has a library with a large range of genres and titles available as well as Content Warnings and Trigger Warnings for each book in the inventory. This is a great resource within the McMaster community. McMaster students and faculty members are welcome to borrow items from our library for academic research or leisure.

Black & Gendered:
Black and Gendered is a group in collaboration with the McMaster Womanists, and is open to any Black McMaster student that is interested in getting together with their peers to discuss the intersection of being Black and experiencing gender-based discrimination and violence. More information on this support group will be available soon.
Employee Health Services administers WSIB claims and benefits for employees of the University. As such we are committed to increasing healthy and safe workplace attitudes and practices. In supporting and promoting awareness initiatives, we are better able to minimize workplace hazards.
All work-related injuries/illnesses must be reported to the Environmental and Occupational Health Support Services (EOHSS) within 24 hours. We are responsible for reporting to the WSIB.

The focus of this Mindful Hatha Yoga group is to tune into your breath, body, sensation, thought and emotions, and practice in a way that brings balance and harmony. We will complete each session with a mindfulness/meditation practice.

To put simply, there is not a thing you cannot improve! AS one of our most requested events, McMaster offers a large variety of classes including Outdoor Yoga, Winter Yoga, Flow and Power Yoga.
